A versatile athlete at CHS, Chris Gocong competed in Football and Track & Field for the Warriors, earning All Tri-Valley League and All CIF honors in both sports. Chris played both quarterback and linebacker for the Warriors accumulating 330 tackles in two years, and was named to the All-state team in 2000. That same year, he set the school record in the Discus with a mark of 183’3” and won the CIF Championship in Discus as well. After CHS, Chris attended Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, studying engineering and playing football. As a member of the Mustangs football team, Chris was named the runner-up for the Buck Buchanan Award in 2004 and took home the award in 2005 as the Defensive MVP in Division 1-AA. He also set the NCAA 1-AA Single Season Sack Record that year with 23.5. He recorded 212 tackles and set a NCAA career-record with 42 sacks for minus 284 yards, and his 61.5 stops for losses of 330 yards rank fourth in Division 1-AA history. Chris was one of the select few to continue playing football after college, having been drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the third round of the 2006 NFL Draft. He played for seven years in the NFL as a linebacker for the Eagles and Cleveland Browns, before retiring in 2012 due to injury. He was inducted into the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Hall of Fame in 2016 and the Cal Poly Athletic Hall of Fame in 2022. Chris and his wife Mandy have two daughters, Layla and Gia. They reside in Santa Barbara, where Chris is a visual artist.
