Boys Track Coach 1967 - ‘68

From coach to official, teacher and athletic director, Jim Bashore was an instrumental leader at Carpinteria High School for 30 years. A 1950 graduate of Oxnard High School, Jim participated in Basketball and Track for the Yellowjackets. He earned his degree in Physical Education from CSU Northridge and completed a Master’s Degree in Education from Azusa Pacific. He began his coaching career in 1960 at Santa Clara High School, followed by stops at Thousand Oaks High School and Rio Mesa High, before joining the teaching and coaching staff at Carpinteria High School in 1967. Jim’s first coaching position at CHS was as Head Boys Basketball Coach. From 1967-1979 the Warriors accumulated a record of 180 wins and 80 losses, won five Tri-Valley League Championships and had six players earn All-CIF Honors. From 1979 to 1987, Jim coached the Boys Tennis team, winning another five Tri-Valley League titles and adding two CIF Championships and one runner-up finish to the Warrior Athletic achievements. A TVL record of 56 consecutive league victories was established by the CHS Boys Tennis team during that time. In 1975, Jim was an integral part of the coaching staff that brought the first CIF Football Championship to Carpinteria High School. He served as Head Track Coach during his first two years at CHS and was involved in the Russell Cup Track Meet for 30 years, serving as the Meet Director for 28 of those years. He was named Honorary Meet Director in 2005. For the last 11 years of his professional career, Jim served as the CHS Athletic Director. The Warriors were highly successful during this time, participating in six CIF football championship games and winning four of them. Jim retired from CHS in 1994, but returned to coach with the Girls Basketball program, serving as the Varsity Co-Coach from 1995-97 and an assistant from 2003-2005. An active member of the CIF, Jim served on the CIF Season of Sports, Regional Playoff, and Boys and Girls Basketball Seeding Committees during his career. He was awarded the prestigious CIF Gold Life Pass in 1997. Jim was inducted into the Southern California Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1996 and the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Hall of Fame in 1997. In 2020, Jim was awarded the “Ray Plutko” Lifetime Achievement award by the Southern California Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association. Jim passed away in 2005, and was married to Bambi Rock Bashore at the time. His family members include daughters Jeanene (Glenn) LaFevers and Kimberly Bashore; grandchildren: Ryan (Amber) and Jake LaFevers and Cody Bashore; and great grandchildren: McKenna, Keira and Colt LaFevers. |
